MAYOR HAILS LOS ANGELES' NEW "VIRTUAL" NEIGHBORHOODS

LOS ANGELES, September 25, 2000 -

Mayor’s office and Department of Neighborhood Empowerment team up with Neighborhood Link to offer Los Angeles neighborhoods and community based organizations free Web sites.

Mayor Richard J. Riordan and the Department of Neighborhood Empowerment today announced the launch of Neighborhood Link in the City of Los Angeles. Neighborhood Link (www.neighborhoodlink.com) is an Internet-based community network that enables metropolitan-area neighborhood associations to create free, interactive Web sites. The program allows neighborhood organizations to showcase their communities, share information and access other related sites. Each site will be directly linked to the City’s Web site, Mayor’s page, City Council page as well as the Department of Neighborhood Empowerment Web site.

“Effective communication between residents and City government, and among neighbors, is the key to building healthy neighborhoods,” said Mayor Riordan. “Through these online, virtual neighborhood sites, Angelenos will have a vital tool to build stronger communication with one another and City government, while showcasing the heart and soul of our City - our communities.”

“Los Angeles is home to many community organizations such as citizen district councils, neighborhood watches, block clubs, and citizen patrols, making it a perfect fit for Neighborhood Link,” said Ted Pinkowitz, CEO of Neighborhood Link. “By connecting neighborhoods with these types of community groups, Neighborhood Link becomes an effective tool to further civic communication and information distribution in the LA community.”

Neighborhood Link enables neighborhood associations and homeowners associations to establish and maintain their own Web sites quickly and easily. No knowledge of HTML or programming language is necessary. The service requires no payment by neighborhood organizations and no use of public funds. The project is underwritten by local companies whose message banners appear on the Neighborhood Link pages. Those organizations that do not have Internet access can link to the community pages from computers in any Los Angles Public Library.

Launched in 1998, Neighborhood Link is fully integrated into communities through partnerships with local governments, neighborhood groups and community organizations, including public schools, libraries, police departments and community newspapers. The Denver-based program is currently deployed in 35 U.S. metropolitan regions and features more than 17,000 neighborhoods online.
