SACRAMENTO REGIONAL TRANSIT HELPS CONNECT RESIDENTS TO FREE WEB SITES

Sponsors Neighborhood Link, a Free Community Web Site Service for Sacramento

SACRAMENTO, June 26, 2000 - Sacramento Rapid Transit (RT) is helping Sacramento citizens hop a line onto the Information Superhighway via Neighborhood Link (www.neighborhoodlink.com), a free neighborhood Web site company.

The transit company announced its sponsorship of Neighborhood Link for Sacramento residents, making it only the second regional transportation company in the United States to bring the service to their community.

Neighborhood Link allows individual neighborhood associations, as well as local organizations and clubs — such as the PTA, book clubs, children’s play groups, and Girl Scouts - to create free Web sites. These sites list important information about the neighborhoods and groups, builds a stronger community, and provides a free forum to discuss issues of concern via “live chats.” The sites also provide links to elected officials, the police department, schools, and other civic and community organizations.

RT will display the unique URL Web site address for each neighborhood in their neighborhood bus shelters. RT will use Neighborhood Link to post links to its bus and train routes on each individual neighborhood site. Additionally, the company will run “banner ads” on the Web site to announce information about their summer youth pass program and about their shuttles to special events - such as local baseball games and the State Fair.

To encourage residents to take part in the free Web site service, all Sacramento buses will carry internal bus cards promoting RT’s sponsorship of Neighborhood Link. In addition, several buses will display the Neighborhood Link information on the sides of the buses during the late summer and early fall.

“We always strive to help the communities we serve, and this is certainly a great tool for our neighborhoods, giving residents a free forum to get involved and communicate with each other,” said Judith Warriner, Customer Relations Manager, Sacramento RT. “We also are excited about the unique ways Neighborhood Link allows us to better service our customers through special offers, Web site-specific promotions, and other valuable information.”

Ted Pinkowitz, the president and CEO of Neighborhood Link, welcomed RT as its second regional transit company to sponsor the service.

“Our sponsors are finding really interesting ways to improve their customer service and customer relations through Neighborhood Link,” Pinkowitz said. “We provide transit companies especially with a great way to offer tailored information to each of the neighborhoods they serve. And the Sacramento residents win because they now can tap into this free tool to increase community involvement.”

Sacramento RT currently operates 69 bus routes and 20.6 miles of light rail covering a 418 square-mile service area using 36 light rail vehicles, 152 CNG buses and 67 diesel buses. Passenger amenities include 31 light rail stops or stations with nine bus and light rail transfer centers and 10 park-and-ride lots. RT carries more than 90,000 passengers on an average weekday and exceeded 27 million passengers during the last fiscal year.

Denver-based Neighborhood Link (www.neighborhoodlink.com) currently services nearly 16,000 neighborhoods, clubs, and organizations in 32 metropolitan areas. The free Web site company, which launched in 1998, becomes fully integrated into communities through partnerships with local governments, neighborhood groups, and community organizations, including public schools, libraries, police departments and community newspapers.
